How Much Is Your Freedom Worth?

Soprano Dolomite Walker
The Soprano Dolomite Walker is an excellent outdoor walker. It’s ten inch wheels make rougher terrain easier to navigate. Its wireless design means no visible break cables can get in the way and it’s welded steel frame eliminates rear forks giving you more walking space. Priced higher than the standard walkers, most of which are made in China. The European produced dolomite line offer real value, at a higher but still reasonable price. Listen to what a recent purchaser said about this walker. “my Soprano walker arrived this morning and I have already been up to the barn to visit my beautiful horses, out to the garden, down our half mile long driveway to the mail box and all with great ease. I would highly recommend this walker to anyone who likes the outdoors as much as I do.” Yes, this walker sells for over $400 but then again, how much is your freedom worth?

Today’s Standard Transfer Benches

leave a comment »

One common safety problem for today’s bathers, especially those with diminishing physical abilities, is getting in and out of the bathtub safely. A bath transfer bench is an inexpensive solution for tub transfer and doubles as a tub seat or a shower seat.

This type pictured is commonly referred to as a standard bath transfer bench. It requires the user to be able to scoot themselves across the seat while lifting their legs over the tub. Adjustable in height, at both ends, so the bath transfer bench remains level, when purchasing one of these benches make sure the bench features non-slip feet and a sturdy handle for support.

These standard bath transfer benches are also available with padded seats, commode openings, and cut outs for private washing. You can find bath transfer benches at a multitude of stores that feature medical supplies online including The Medical Club.

The Benefits of a Simple Shower Stool

leave a comment »

How many individuals do you know that have trouble, or are in need of assistance, when getting up from a chair? Of those people, how many have a shower stool or at least something to rest on when showering? If you answered even just one, that is one too many!

If you think about it, a shower stool or wall-mounted shower seat is a must have if you run the risk of falling and not able to help yourself. Just being able to rest your legs while bathing will decrease risk of injury for many reasons. You are not standing up. There’s a much larger distance to the floor. You are not exerting as much energy, which means you won’t have your knees give out from stress.

Is there an issue with a shower stool or chair? Yes, you have to be able to get back up from the chair and out of the tub or shower. A good bathtub bar or wall-mounted grab bar adds that other grip you need to lift yourself up.

Dangers to prepare for – Toilets

leave a comment »

One area is the toilet itself. This, obviously, is an unavoidable area. What makes it dangerous is that it’s a very hard surface and you have to lower your body to it. Consequently, you must get yourself back up off of it.

A toilet safety rail that mounts under the toilet seat solves most issues with this area. As shown in the picture, it gives you support arms to hold on to when lowering yourself down to the sitting position. The arms also make nice arm rests as well!

What’s the first thing you grab for if you need help up? Yep. The sink. Now you have support arms designed specifically for lifting yourself up. To take it a step further, toilet safety rails help with tub transfer as well.

Dangers to prepare for – Use of water

leave a comment »

Sitting, standing, and climbing over anything for a person with limited mobility is hard enough. Doing it on and around slippery surfaces such as porcelain, stainless steel, and tile isn’t helping matters. Now let’s cover that with some water. What might not have been slick before water contacted the surface is now a major hazard; and you don’t even know it!

A bath transfer bench or a shower stool can help you from slipping in the tub or shower. Also, make sure you have a bathmat and rug placed in good locations. Make sure they cover plenty of area! Many of fallen by stepping just off of a bathmat or rug.

Having something to safely step on outside as well as inside the tub will make a huge difference. Also, please install grab bars or support rails wherever you think you might need something to hang on too!

Shower Chairs and Shower Stools and Transfer Benches….Oh My!

leave a comment »

That’s right! There are so many variations of shower chairs, one might not even be able to process the differences. Let’s take a look at these different shower chairs to better understand their uses.

Your basic shower stool or shower chair is designed for convenience in the tub or shower. It is usually made of a blow-molded plastic and aluminum for handling weight and being stain-resistant. A person with some mobility, but not a lot of endurance or strength would benefit from this type of chair.

A bath transfer bench or sliding transfer bench helps the individual with very limited mobility or needs help with tub transfer. The same materials apply as with the basic shower chairs.

There are also transport PVC rolling shower chairs for those who use a roll in shower. These types of shower chairs are made of high quality PVC and can be rolled into a handicap shower with a low or no threshold. There are also some that are for rehab purposes as well.

All types have multiple variations and price levels to fit anyone’s needs or budget. I hope this at least points you to the right category!
